Reading mastery in the first grade is an important building block of school success. Children become confident and do well in all academic pursuits when they are able to read fluently and with comprehension. A lack of reading skills can have negative consequences that may last a lifetime, making higher education and higher earnings out of reach. At North Miami Elementary our goal as first grade teachers is to focus on building reading confidence. We use the following techniques: |

| Phonemic awareness refers to the understanding that the sounds of spoken language work together to make words. | |||||

|||||
|
Phonics refers to the understanding that there is a predictable relationship between the sounds in spoken language and letters or combinations of letters used in written language. |

|||||
|
Fluency is the ability to read text smoothly, accurately, and quickly. |
|||||
|
|
|||||
|
This refers to the development of stored information about the meanings and pronunciation of words necessary for communication. |
|||||
|
|
|||||
|
Comprehension refers to the understanding of the meaning of a passage and the relationship amongst the words (that is, the context in which the words occur). |
